About the COTA Living Longer Living Stronger Program Living
Longer Living Stronger is a safe and quality controlled strength
training program specifically designed for people over 50 to build
muscle mass and increase bone density as well as improve strength,
balance, gait, flexibility and coordination.The program is based
on research that has shown strength (or resistance) training not only
improves quality of life and well being, but can also assist in the
prevention and management of chronic disease such as arthritis, Type 2
diabetes, osteoporosis and even depression. Living Longer Living
Stronger is administered by the Council On The Aging (COTA) and
delivered by exclusively endorsed fitness centres throughout Western
Australia.
How do I know strength training will help me?
Answer the following:
- Do you find it difficult to walk long distances or climb stairs?
- Do you get tired quickly and feel lacking in energy?
- Do you suffer from arthritis, diabetes or osteoporosis?
- Do you have difficulty lifting things during your daily tasks?
- Are you prone to falling?
What does the Program Involve? Living Longer Living Stronger provides supervised strength training activities, using a combination of free weights and weight machines, at an endorsed facility. Before taking part in the programme, each participant is assessed and a program is tailored to their specific needs. Participants then take part in regular group training sessions, making it a great opportunity to socialize while getting fit. Who can participate? Living Longer Living Stronger caters specifically for people over 50, regardless of current physical health or fitness level.
How much does it cost? Living Longer Living Stronger group training sessions are provided for a maximum (capped rate) of $6.60 per session, which is payable weekly or monthly depending on the facility. Shapes discounts the price to $5.50 per session. A once-off assessment fee of $55.00 also applies.
What about Quality Control? All facilities providing Living Longer Living Stronger must meet strict criteria set by COTA WA to become an endorsed provider, ensuring that the program is delivered at the highest standard throughout the state. Qualified instructors supervise Living Longer Living Stronger group sessions at every endorsed facility to guide participants in correct techniques and monitor safety, in addition to providing encouragement and support. Each participant follows an individually designed progressive strength training program with regular increases in resistance in a fun and friendly atmosphere.
