Shapes Health Club FAQ'S

What should I wear?

The most important thing to understand when you begin at the gym is to wear clothes that you are comfortable in. People who come are sharing the common goal of increasing fitness and there is no need to go out and buy the latest brand names if that’s not what you’re comfortable with. Any clothes that allow you room to move and sweat are fine, an old pair of track pants and your favourite comfy shirt. Sports shoes are recommended to provide you with sufficient comfort and support during your workout, and thongs or bare feet are not allowed. Other than that, the choice is yours!

What should I bring?

You should bring a towel big enough to use to wipe down equipment when you have finished on a machine for hygiene purposes, or to spread out if using the floor mats. A water bottle is also needed to replenish those water stores you’ll lose from sweating during your workout! If you forget your towel, you can purchase a “Towel-to-Go” from reception, and there are a wide range of drinks available, from water to nutrient packed sports drinks for your workout, and protein drinks to help assist your quest to a healthy new you!

How do I get in?

To gain access to Shapes, simply present the ID card issued to you when you signed your agreement and one of the friendly receptionists will scan the card for you, which will allow you access to all club facilities. You are able to leave the card at the reception and pick it up when you leave, or if attending a class simply take it with you and avoid the queues when the class is finished! If you have personal belongings with you, you then have the option of leaving them in one of the pigeonholes behind the desk or asking for a locker key.

Can I still attend if I lose my ID card?

When you join at Shapes you are provided 1 membership card and 2 key cards. We will issue one of these to you, so if you lose your existing card, please let our reception staff know and we will issue one which we have stored for you. If you lose all 3 cards you will be required to purchase another combo of entrance cards for a fee of $10.00.
Changing rooms:The changing room contains lockers, showers, toilets and a sauna. There are also hooks on the walls to hang clothes, and benches to place belongings should you so wish. There is also a clothes bin in which any items that may be accidentally left in the change rooms are placed awaiting collection.
Lockers: Lockers are provided for the convenience of our members, and are located in the change rooms. Lockers are to be used only for the duration of your gym visit and locker keys must not leave the club. Please ensure all belongings are removed from the locker when you leave as Shapes cannot take responsibility for any items you may leave behind.

Showers: While Shapes provides showers, you need to bring your own shampoo, conditioner, shower gel and (if you wish) extra towel. All showers have separate curtains and the shower area is separated from the main change rooms for added privacy.

Sauna: The sauna is a separate room within the change rooms and is used for muscle recovery. Temperatures in the sauna can reach up to 90 degrees Celsius. Please read directions and information on the sauna door to ensure you get the most from your recovery time. Please note: The sauna should be avoided during pregnancy, whilst breast feeding and those suffering from any heart related condition (including high blood pressure).

What if I leave something behind?

If you leave something in the changing rooms or around the gym, they will either be placed in the clothes basket in the changing rooms, or handed to lost property on reception. Simply ask the reception if your possession has been handed up and they will gladly return it or ask other staff members to keep an eye out for it. Unclaimed items are kept in lost property for a month before being donated to charity.

Even if you don’t choose a package that contains personal training, all memberships entitle you to a Health Appraisal and Program Design. During this session a Personal Trainer will take your measurements, blood pressure, and body fat percentage then helps you set goals related to these, before designing and taking you step-by-step through your own personal program. This program can include both cardio and resistance exercises, with each exercise being monitored so you are never incorrectly using equipment or feeling lost while you are here. 2 weeks later the trainer will accompany you through your workout again so if you have any queries they can be voiced, and any incorrect methods can be rectified. You are then entitled to quarterly reappraisals so you can track your progress and set new goals accordingly! To book your appraisal or reappraisal simply ask a receptionist when you’re ready.

What if I have problems using equipment?

There are always a number of personal trainers present at the club so if you ever need help with your technique, don’t be afraid to ask!

What is a personal trainer?

A personal trainer is a professional who has undergone appropriate studies, training and registration to allow them to teach clients about the importance of diet, exercise and health. A personal training session is a one-on-one session with a trainer who takes you through a diverse variety of exercises designed to keep your heart rate up and maximise fat burning. We pride ourselves on having friendly and motivating personal trainers who will not only help you reach your goals, but get to know you and share your journey. Registered Trainers: All trainers at Shapes Health Club are registered with Fitness Australia, the peak body for health clubs and fitness professionals in Australia. They are required to complete a continuous education process to maintain their registration. When you use a registered personal trainer you are receiving up-to-date training techniques tailored for you by a qualified professional.

How long does a personal training session last?

Each session lasts for half an hour, however it is a good idea to get to your session early so you can warm up before commencing, as this is not included in your PT time so you can make the most of it! Training sessions can occur as often or as seldom as you wish, however if you have a package of sessions to use up, once or twice a week is often considered an effective amount.

Why is personal training a good idea?

personal training

Personal training is highly beneficial for a number of reasons

  1. It can help you get the results you want, fast!
  2. It can increase your motivation and keep you coming
  3. Variation in sessions keeps them interesting and fulfilling
  4. You can get extra work on those “problem spots”
  5. It can help you gain confidence when working out
  6. It gives you an excuse to give it everything you’ve got!

Of course, there are a million other reasons, and these may not be yours, but one thing is for sure: Personal training works!
Don’t I have to be super fit to justify personal training? Though personal training is often marketed to the elite through magazines and celebrities, the truth is that personal training can be the perfect kick start for new members. Each workout is tailor-made to your needs so you won’t be doing exercise you aren’t capable of, or comfortable doing. The confidence boost in realising your exercise abilities can help you in your normal workouts and your motivation for coming. Also, if you feel you have long term or larger weight loss goals, the faster results can really make you feel that you’re achieving something from your time here.

Personal training cancellations must be made 12 hours prior to the session. As we have allocated you a time slot, if you need to cancel on the day, you will still be charged for the session.

What are “Group Fitness Classes?”

Group fitness classes are for large numbers of people to attend at the same time and workout together. The club offers a large range of classes from dancing based classes to boxing and weights, at all fitness levels. Classes generally last for an hour. In many classes you can work at your own pace, and the overall feeling of a team effort can help increase motivation.
If it is your first time attending a class please advise the instructor and they will ensure they will keep an eye on your throughout the class.

When do the classes run?

A full class list of times and classes are available from the reception, or on our website. Do I need to book for the classes? There is no need to book for any of the classes we currently have running, however we recommend arriving 5-10 minutes early to secure your place in the room, particularly in the “Step”, “Pump” and “Spin” classes where some setup is required. Crèche
The crèche is open for use by both members and casual visitors between 9am and 1pm Monday to Friday and between 9am and 12 noon Saturday. Children may stay in the crèche for 90 minutes, and they will be supervised and entertained by accredited child carers. The crèche may be used from children 8 weeks to 12 years. For more information on the crèche please go to our free crèche section on this website.

How much does it cost?

For members, the crèche is completely free for your children. However, where additional children accompany a member there is a fee of $2.20 per child and for non-members the fee is $5.50 per child.
Booking appointments: Personal training and appraisals are the responsibility of the member. In the case of continuous personal training, your trainer will endeavour to find a constant time that suits you to save time and hassle. All bookings and cancellations can be made at the reception or by telephone.

Can I put my membership on hold?

Shapes understands that you might need time off from time to time, and because of this we offer a hold on memberships from no less than 2 weeks and no more than 3 months. In case of pregnancy the time frame can be wavered to a maximum of 9 months. Simply ask at reception to place your membership on hold. Please note that a small fee applies.

Can I cancel my membership?

A membership can only be cancelled where you have moved from the area or have an injury which prevents you from continuing your exercise. Membership can be cancelled as follows:-
* if paying on a Direct Debit membership fee, a cancellation fee of 50% of the remaining payments must be paid before finalising the cancellation.
* for both direct debit memberships and paid in advance memberships we allow you to transfer your membership to a friend or family member.

How do I transfer my membership?

Shapes also has an easy transfer method in which a fee is paid and a friend or relative (must be a person who does not currently hold a membership) takes over the remaining time and payments left on the membership. To cancel or transfer a membership, you must meet with and get authorisation from the club manager.

Can I bring a friend?

Casual visits are available for your friends and family. A casual visit gives the guest access to all facilities, including cardio, weights and group fitness classes for the duration of their visit. Casual members must sign in on the casual visitor register at the reception desk each time they attend.
Shapes allows members to bring a friend for free on Fridays.
Whilst your friend is exercising with you we trust that you will look after them to ensure they have a safe and effective workout. And remember, if they choose to join, you will be rewarded also.

Which are the busiest and quietest times? Generally speaking, the peak times at Shapes occur between 9am and 11am, and then after people finish work from about 5pm to 7pm. The quiet times are usually early mornings between 6am -9am and then from about 12 – 3. Sundays are also generally quiet so if you prefer working out when there are less people around! Our facility is large and it is rare that we have people waiting for equipment or missing out on classes.
