Shapes COTAMedical research has proven that strength training at any age will:

  • Build muscle mass and strength
  • Preserve bone density

  • Decrease arthritic inflammation
  • Improve heart conditioning
  • Be an effective anti-depressant

About the COTA Living Longer Living Stronger Program
Living Longer Living Stronger is a safe and quality controlled strength training program specifically designed for people over 50 to build muscle mass and increase bone density as well as improve strength, balance, gait, flexibility and coordination. The program is based on research that has shown strength (or resistance) training not only improves quality of life and well being, but can also assist in the prevention and management of chronic disease such as arthritis, Type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis and even depression. Living Longer Living Stronger is administered by the Council On The Aging (COTA) and delivered by exclusively endorsed fitness centres throughout Western Australia.

How do I know strength training will help me?
Answer the following:

  • Do you find it difficult to walk long distances or climb stairs?
  • Do you get tired quickly and feel lacking in energy?
  • Do you suffer from arthritis, diabetes or osteoporosis?
  • Do you have difficulty lifting things during your daily tasks?
  • Are you prone to falling?

What does the Program Involve?

Living Longer Living Stronger provides supervised strength training activities, using a combination of free weights and weight machines, at an endorsed facility.
Before taking part in the programme, each participant is assessed and a program is tailored to their specific needs. Participants then take part in regular group training sessions, making it a great opportunity to socialize while getting fit. Who can participate?
Living Longer Living Stronger caters specifically for people over 50, regardless of current physical health or fitness level.

How much does it cost?

Living Longer Living Stronger group training sessions are provided for a maximum (capped rate) of $6.60 per session, which is payable weekly or monthly depending on the facility.
Shapes discounts the price to $5.50 per session. A once-off assessment fee of $55.00 also applies.

What about Quality Control?

All facilities providing Living Longer Living Stronger must meet strict criteria set by COTA WA to become an endorsed provider, ensuring that the program is delivered at the highest standard throughout the state. Qualified instructors supervise Living Longer Living Stronger group sessions at every endorsed facility to guide participants in correct techniques and monitor safety, in addition to providing encouragement and support. Each participant follows an individually designed progressive strength training program with regular increases in resistance in a fun and friendly atmosphere.

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, Living Longer Living Stronger can help you.

Gym 4 KidsShapes Gym for Kids

Very few fitness centres cater for kids, and its almost impossible to find a specialised kids gym program. Shapes Health Club invites your child to become a part of Gym 4 Kids, a unique fitness program aimed for children 6 - 16 years of age who actively participate in physical education.

The Program

Designed and supervised by qualified trainers, combines a series of sports, plyometrics and aerobic movements.

Each session will provide variety and spontaneity, but the format will remain consistent. Basic education, warmup, stretching, cardiovascular, balance and coordination. this is achieved through agility work, self defence movements, core stability activities and plyometrics.

The program is offered in line with school programs all year round.

Everyone is encouraged to be a participant regardless of weight, size, gender or ability. Each child will recieve an initial assessment at the end of the program, all under the supervision of a Qualified certificate IV Personal Trainer.

The benefits

The outcomes we look to achieve for participants includes increased physical abilities such as, flexibility, strength, muscular endurance and power. In addition we have found improvements in motor abilities such as balance, spatial orientation, coordination and agility.

The Facts

Regular participation in physical activity by children and young adolescents is essential for optimum growth, development and ongoing health and well being.

No longer do children have to feel singled out by their weight or be self-conscious about exercising with their peers because the children who participate at the Gym 4 Kids find that they become a more confident, secure, how to be efficient mover, and also gain skills that can be transferred into all areas of life. Most importantly we are a non competitive and fun enviroment where everyone can work out comfortably in a gym and achieve results.
